EU Sustainability Regulations for Blinds: CSRD, EUDR & PPWR

EU sustainability rules are reshaping what a blind exporter is expected to document, but most of the load does not land on the factory. CSRD reporting is the importer's obligation; the supplier's job is to hand over the material, energy and packaging data behind it. The one rule that reaches directly into the product range is EUDR, and it only catches wood and bamboo components - not the polyester, PVC or aluminum lines. PPWR is about packaging, and the importer carries EPR registration.

Key takeaways for an EU order

  • CSRD applies to large EU-operating companies, not to Chinese factories. An importer over the size thresholds must report supply-chain impacts; the supplier just needs to provide material composition and packaging data when asked.
  • EUDR reaches wood and blind components - real wood venetians and bamboo roll-ups. Pure polyester roller, zebra and honeycomb blinds are not directly in scope, though auxiliary wood parts should be checked.
  • EUDR requires geolocation of raw material plots and proof of no deforestation after 31 December 2020. High-risk countries need third-party verification; FSC/PEFC certificates and logging permits are what the importer asks for.
  • PPWR sets 2040 recycling targets (plastic 60%, paper and cardboard 85%) and EPR registration - Germany LUCID, France Triman - is the importer's cost, not the factory's.

CSRD: reporting is the importer's job

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive obliges large EU companies to disclose environmental and social information, including supply-chain impacts. It runs on a double-materiality test: how sustainability issues affect the company financially, and how the company affects people and the environment.

  • Scope is set by size thresholds - employees, net turnover, balance sheet. Blind importers over those thresholds must cover supply-chain data in their reports.
  • Reporting content spans emissions, energy, waste, labor rights and due diligence.
  • What we supply: product material composition, production energy data where available, and packaging material breakdown. We have run BSCI-audited production since 1998, which is the kind of audit trail CSRD reports lean on.

EUDR: only wood and bamboo are in scope

The EU Deforestation Regulation requires certain commodities to be deforestation-free. For blinds, the reach is narrow but real.

  • Real wood venetian blinds and bamboo roll-ups can fall in scope. Pure PVC or polyester roller, zebra and honeycomb shades are generally not directly affected.
  • Operators must run due diligence - information collection, risk assessment, risk mitigation.
  • Geolocation data (latitude and longitude) of the raw material plots must show no involvement in deforestation after 31 December 2020.
  • High-risk countries require independent third-party verification. Suppliers provide wood source certificates, FSC/PEFC certification and logging permits.

If you import our bamboo roll-up or natural wood venetian lines, plan the EUDR paperwork before the order; sourcing certificates take longer than a standard commercial invoice. Polyester and sunscreen orders need nothing extra under EUDR.

PPWR: packaging and EPR

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation sets recycling and design targets, and EPR registration sits with the importer.

  • All packaging recyclable or reusable by 2030; 2040 recycling targets: plastic 60%, metal 70%, glass 80%, paper and cardboard 85%.
  • Packaging weight and volume must be minimized - no over-packaging.
  • Extended Producer Responsibility costs and registration - Germany LUCID, France Triman - are the importer's obligation.
  • Packaging must indicate material type and recycling instructions.

Our standard shipping uses a clear inner box and a 5-layer master carton, which is already the design direction PPWR wants. The carton is plain fiberboard, not hard-to-recycle composite.

Bottom line

For a standard polyester blind order, EU sustainability means supplying material data on request and shipping in already-recyclable cartons. For wood or bamboo lines, it means planning EUDR geolocation and FSC/PEFC paperwork up front. The reporting, EPR fees and registrations stay with the importer.

For the chemical rules that sit alongside sustainability reporting, our chemical restriction guide covers REACH and SVHC. The broader EU market-entry rules are in the EU compliance guide. If you are sourcing the wood and bamboo lines EUDR reaches, the bamboo roll-up shade page is a starting point.
